Frequently Asked Questions
Driving Records
  • HOW TO RUN A CALIFORNIA DRIVING RECORD?

Log in to our website at loganreg.com and go to California to run transactions. Click on the Driver's License tab at the top. There are two ways to run a driving record, by name and DL number or by name and DOB. If you run a record by name and DL number, you can run it instantly; however, if you run by name and DOB it is an overnight request. DMV doesn't provide instant records for name and DOB.

If you run an overnight record prior to 4 p.m., the record will be back the next morning. If the record is run after 4 p.m. (DMV's cutoff time), the record will not be available for two days. If a record is run after 4 o'clock on Friday, we cannot send it to DMV until Monday and it won't be back until Tuesday.

Many times when our customers run a name and DL number, they realize that they keyed in the first name incorrectly and if they get a "no record", they will run the record again with the correct first name. Please keep in mind that when a record is run by name and DL number, DMV matches the DL number only to the FIRST THREE LETTERS of the last name. It doesn't matter how the first name is spelled.

  • WHAT IF I AM UNCERTAIN OF THE LAST NAME?

There is also another way of running a DL number if you are uncertain of the last name. You can run the name, DL number, and DOB. If the name and DL number don't match, but the DL number and DOB do match, you will get the record regardless of the last name.

If a person's name is hyphenated, do not enter the hyphen, just combine the two names with no space between them.

  • HOW LONG DO VIOLATIONS STAY ON A CALIFORNIA DRIVING RECORD?

Most convictions of traffic offenses such as hit and run and reckless driving will remain on the record for 7 years from the violation date. A DUI remains on the record for 10 years and this rule is retroactive. Most other traffic offense convictions remain on the record for 3 years from the violation date. Accidents are reported for 3 years from the accident date if they are at fault for the accident. Actions taken against driving privilege, such as suspension or revocation due to a DUI or a failure to provide financial responsibility, will be reported for 3 years from the proof termination date or the reinstatement date, whichever is earlier. A FTA for DUI offenses will be reported for 10 years from the violation date. All other FTA and FTP citations will be reported for 5 years from the violation date.

  • RECORD UNAVAILABLE THROUGH AUTOMATION

A record unavailable by automation means that the record was removed from the AMIS file because DMV is doing something to the record, maybe merging two records or something of that nature. Most of the time it is unavailable because the DMV Fraud Unit is investigating that particular driving record. We can only order the record manually. If DMV is just fixing something, we get a record back; however, if it is in the Fraud Unit, DMV will not release the record. If you wish us to submit the record manually, you can make the request through our website.

  • RECORD SUBMITTED BY NAME AND DOB COMES BACK WITH ERROR MESSAGE "UNABLE TO IDENTIFY"

If you get this message, it means that more than one person has the same name and DOB and the DMV wants further identifying information, such as middle initial and last known address. You can try to run the record again overnight using the middle initial and many times you will get the record; however, the response may again come back asking for additional information. At that time, you need to submit a "Manual DL" request on our website, and then send us an email at contact@loganreg.com that includes the information you submitted in manual DL, the response you received from DMV, as well as the additional information like middle initial, last known address, and social security number if you have it. The manual DL request takes several weeks to get back from DMV.

  • HOW DO I RUN A DRIVING RECORD USING A MIDDLE INITIAL?

Leave a space after the first name and then put in the middle initial.
    Example: JOAN R

  • WHAT DOES CLASS X MEAN ON A DRIVER'S LICENSE?

An X Class is shown on a driving record when someone goes into DMV to get a license, renew a driver's license, etc. and something comes up that makes DMV suspend the license for one of many reasons. The person could have failed the test, there may be more medical information needed, etc. This particular suspension isn't for a violation of some sort, it is so DMV can determine and satisfy themselves on some matter which we don't know. It might be because he didn't pass the driver's test or some medical situation came up that needed to be looked into. But, that is guessing. The DMV manual shows it as "X Class – ISD Control" which basically means DMV is looking into something

  • IF I RUN A CA DL REPORT ON AN INDIVIDUAL WILL IT SHOW PROOF OF INSURANCE?

California DMV does not show proof of insurance on a driving or vehicle record. In order to get that information if you are covering an accident, you have to file an SR19 form with DMV and give them the particulars. The form is on our website under the Forms and Resources button. Be sure to click on the Uninsured Motorist box.

  • CAN I RUN MY OWN DL NUMBER OR VEHICLE FOR TESTING PURPOSES?

NO. Not for any reason. This is against DMV regulation and will likely result in an audit.

  • IN WHAT ORDER DOES A PERSON'S NAME APPEAR ON A CA DL?

The name will always appear on the printout as "Last, First, Middle". It is usually easy to tell what the first and last names are; however, sometimes there is a name like James, Tyler, Scott so knowing the order in which the names appear is useful.

  • IS THERE ANY SIGNIFICANCE TO THE FIRST LETTER OF A DRIVER'S LICENSE?

The letter doesn't signify anything. The DL configurations started with A and just keep going.

Manual DL
  • WHAT IS A MANUAL DL?

The manual DL request is used when a record is unavailable through automation. This can be because the record was taken out of the AMIS file (DMV's electronic database) or because there is more than one person with the name and DOB requested and DMV requires additional information to identify the request.

When you submit a manual DL request on our website, we mail the request to DMV. After the request is processed, the DMV mails the response to Logan Registration by USPS. When we get the response, we place the report in your inbox. This process takes several weeks and cannot be expedited.

Vehicle Registration Records
  • WHAT IS REFLECTED ON THE VEHICLE/VESSEL RECORD

The online vehicle/vessel record reflects the current record information for the vehicle/vessel in question, i.e., current registered owner name/names, lien holder name, vehicle/vessel description, registration status, etc. It does not show the ownership history of the vehicle/vessel. If a vessel is run by CF number, the record will show the hull number.

  • HOW TO RUN A CALIFORNIA VEHICLE REGISTRATION RECORD

Log in to loganreg.com and Click "California" to run transaction. Choose the tab at the top of the screen that says "Vehicle Registration". A vehicle registration record can be run by either license plate or VIN.

  • RUN A PERSONALIZED PLATE

Run the record just as you would a license number, but make sure that you never use a "zero" when you run the plate. If you think a plate is "LRS10" you would run it as "LRS1O". There are no zeros (0) in personalized plates.

  • RUN A PLATE THAT HAS A SYMBOL (LIKE A HEART) IN IT?

You cannot run any symbols, nor do you put in any spaces when running a record. If a plate is "I (heart) YOU", run the plate as "IYOU". Omit the symbol and the space and run the rest of the characters.

  • RUN A RECORD WITH AN "AS OF" DATE?

Log on to our website and click California to run transactions, then choose the Vehicle Registration tab at the top. Only use a license plate to run an 'as of' date. Key in the license plate number just as you normally would, and then click "overnight". When you do that, a box will appear for you to enter the 'as of' date. After you enter your reference number, etc. press "send immediately to DMV". Your record will be in your inbox the next morning.

  • WHY YOU SHOULDN'T RUN A VIN WITH AN "AS OF" DATE:

California has a strange way of running "as of" dates. If you use a VIN to run the as of date and there is more than one license plate associated with that VIN, you will get a "No Record" reply even though there really is a record. That is why we recommend that you always use a plate number if at all possible when running an "as of" date.

  • WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN I RUN A PLATE AND THE RESPONSE COMES BACK "LICENSE NOT COMPATIBLE"?

If you get a license not compatible response, it means the license plate doesn't match the file code. Whenever a plate is run, it must be accompanied by a "file code", A for Auto, C for Commercial, M for Motorcycle, S for special plate, etc. Our program automatically inserts the file code for you. If you get that response, please contact our office for assistance.

  • ARE WE ABLE TO RUN CALIFORNIA DEALER PLATES?

Dealer plates are not available on line; however, you can run a dealer plate through the DMV website, www.dmv.ca.gov. After logging on to the website, click on on-line requests and it should take you to a menu that allows you to run a dealer plate. If you encounter any problems, please do not hesitate to call Logan Registration.

  • CAN I RUN MY VEHICLE FOR TESTING PURPOSES?

NO. Not for any reason. This is against DMV regulation and will likely result in an audit.

Automated History
  • RUN AN AUTOMATED HISTORY?

An automated history is a printout with all previous and current owners of a vehicle in California. Automated histories are a manual process. This means that we send the request to the DMV, and after they process the request, they send the response back via US mail. This means that the response can take several weeks to get back, sometimes longer depending on DMV turnaround time. You can submit a request through our website under California, and then click on the "Automated History" tab at the top.

We recommend that you run an automated history with license plate number. If you run by VIN and there is more than one license number associated with the VIN, all you will get is the list of the two license numbers. Whether you get a record or not, DMV will still charge you.

Photo History
  • RUN A PHOTO HISTORY?

A photo history contains photocopies of all documents submitted to the DMV to change ownership of a vehicle. They are ordered by year and normally available only for: change of ownership, release of liability, and salvage certificate.

You run a photo history the same way as an automated history, but you will click on the photo history tab. Photo Histories are only available in California, and are only available from the year 2006 up. Photo histories can only be ordered for "title issue" dates. Those are the only years where paperwork has been submitted; however, if there is a paperless title, nothing will be available for that year. If there is a RIP or RDF, that means that paperwork was submitted, couldn't be completed, and the paperwork was handed back to the person who submitted it. Therefore, no photo history documents are available for that transaction.

  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AUTOMATED HISTORY AND A PHOTO HISTORY?

There are two different history requests. There is the automated history request which shows all owners from the time the vehicle enters California up to the present date. This is an actual history report.

A photo history is a copy of all documents submitted for a transfer of ownership, a repossession, a salvage certificate, etc. Photo histories only go back to 2008 to the present and are not available for registration renewals only.

Automated Name Index (ANI)
  • WHAT IS AN ANI?

An ANI (Alpha Name Index) search will identify all vehicles currently registered to a specific individual at a specific address. This search is only available in California. This is a manual search and normally takes from 10 days to two weeks to get back. ANI's can be run by all of our clients through Logan Registration.

Disabled Plates and Placards
  • RUNNING DISABLED PLATES:

There are many disabled plate configurations. The older configurations have five numbers. If you look at an older DP plate, you will notice that there the letters DP, one over the other, is either on the left side before the plate number or on the right side after the plate number. If the letters are on the left you would run the record as DP12345. If the letters are on the right, you would run the records as 12345DP.

If a plate is configured with a letter followed by four numbers, key in DP and then the letter followed by the DP. Example: DPU1234

If a plate is configured with 4 numbers followed by a letter, key in the 4 numbers and letter and follow with the DP. Example: 1234UDP

The newest DP configuration is 3 numbers and 2 letters, i.e., 123AB. You would key in this configuration as follows: DP123AB.

Another new configuration is 2 letters followed by 3 numbers, i.e., AB123. You would key in the configuration as AB123DP.

The letters DP must always be part of the entry.

  • DISABLED PLACARD INFORMATION:

A Disabled Person Placard is not a license plate that belongs to a vehicle. It is the blue placard that can be hung on the mirror of any vehicle in which the disabled person is riding. Since it isn't assigned to a particular vehicle, if you run the placard you will only get the information on the person, not on the vehicle itself. There is no way of knowing the information for the vehicle in question.

A Disabled Plate is assigned to a certain vehicle belonging to the disabled person. If you were running a record on a disabled plate, you would get all of the information concerning the vehicle to which the DP plate is assigned. When a disabled person gets a different vehicle, that person would take the plate and put it on the new vehicle and, in turn, must notify DMV of the change.

Always keep in mind that a DL placard is entirely different than a DP plate.

MISC
  • CAN A PI GET ADDRESS INFO IF THEY POST A $50,000 BOND?

There are only a certain number of companies that can obtain address information. These companies include insurance companies, attorneys for accident related cases with post notification, finance companies, registration services, etc. No PI can get address information for any reason including service of process.

Companies filling out an application for their requester code sometimes get confused because the application has places to check for address information. The application is inclusive for both those companies that can get address information and those that cannot get address information.
